This Mountain

Looking down from a narrow ledge, I am filled with respect for the heights our forefathers climbed.

Overcoming any obstacle of treachery, there must have been a goal hard-pressed in their hearts and minds.

Many have been conquered by the deceptive and dangerous characteristics that define this great mountain.

So I am fortunate to continue where their paths ended for youth springs from no fountain.

Some peer up at the distance yet to travel and sooner settle for the comfort of this ledge than attempt higher elevations.

Falling victim, not to rugged terrain, instead to an empty soul which echoes and amplifies their meager frustrations.

Fire burning deep within my being will not allow me to subside to a test, which is my destiny!

Mine eyes fixed upward, I prepare to do battle on mental and physical grounds and hang my enemies in effigy!

I've seen those who sit atop this mountain plot to lower ropes with promises to aid us in our great ascent.

Once our trust was gained and we ventured out onto the ropes, they allowed us to plummet...destitute of strength.

Higher and higher I continue to climb until a great, hot wind wraps itself around and around my very roots.

Moisture deep within me burns its way to the surface, forming drops that race toward hell, ricocheting from my boots.

I've found those who would stand with me to provide inspiration, uplifting me when I'm feeling down.

What measure of trickery has been conjured to ensnare me, to foil my quest for equality and level ground!

The wind itself begins to whisper to me, assuring me of my failure and predicting my impending doom.

Yet the UNCHANGING WORD always has and always will continue to stand, so it is the WORD I now consume!

Instead of climbing harder, I learn to climb smarter...what I know I am committed to teach to others.

I climb for my kids! I climb for my people! I climb so that there shall be no judgment based on COLOR!

"CONTINUE TO CLIMB!"
